Texas historical marker approved

The Texas Historical Commission has approved a marker to be placed in Rio Grande City.  Our next steps will be to get the appropriate wording approved, and then to find a site for the marker.  The site will need approval by the owner of the property.  At the time when the marker is completed and the site is located, we will have a ceremony in Rio Grande City.

Thurs 7/7: San Antonio outreach committee meeting

This is why we do this:   to honor those courageous farm workers who marched from South Texas through here in the summer of 1966 and no one remembers this historic Chicano event because it is not written in any history book.

Our next meeting of the Outreach Committee to invite San Antonio to our Labor Day events will be held on Thursday, July 7, at 7 pm, at Esperanza Peace &Justice Center, 922 San Pedro.

Come prepared with your ideas and lists of your organizational reach, and e mails.

San Antonio: Celebration to Commemorate 1966 Starr County Farm Worker Strike and March

SAVE THE DATE

50th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION TO

COMMEMORATE THE 1966 STARR COUNTY FARM WORKER STRIKE AND MARCH

San Antonio – Labor Day, Sept 5, 2016

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I am reaching out to you because of your commitment to fostering a more just community in San Antonio. Your support is crucial to helping us plan a very special historic event on Labor Day, Monday, Sept 5, 2016.  As a member of the outreach committee that is planning this event, I would like to count on your support for this event.

On June 1, 1966, 50 years ago, Starr County farm workers led a strike against La Casita Farms because they were paid 40 cents an hour to harvest cantaloupes. It was time to take a stand to end the poverty.  At the end of the melon season, they started a400-mile march that came through San Antonio on August 27 and then went on to the State Capitol, arriving on Labor Day.  For information about this event in Texas please go to http://www.farmworkers2016.org

We would be so honored to have your organization join with us on Labor Day, Monday, Sept 5, for the 10 a.m. Mass at San Fernando Cathedral and then on the march to Milam Park for a rally and a short program.

I will follow up in the next few days with a phone call to discuss how you and your organization might support this historic commemorative event.  Please e mail me your best contact information and ways you and your organization might be able to participate, and please copy bobtheunionguy@aol.com

Your support is needed in the following ways:

  • Endorsing the Commemoration and March;
  • Helping to publicize the event;
  • Representing your organization in the March and Rally and bringing others with you;
  • Making a donation to help fund the Commemoration, March and Rally.  Could you give $50-$200 to support the costs?   Donations are tax deductible and may be made to the Cesar Chavez Foundation, PO Box 14124, San Antonio, Tx 78214-0124.

Thank you for your support.
